About

BIO

PUKK is the musical outlet for Irish Singer / Songwriter Joe Chalmers.

PUKK started life as Pissed Up Karaoke or P.U.K for short. It was the name given to one of Joe’s old drunken 4 track tape recordings after listening back to it in the sober light of day. PUK was brought to life in March 2016 on the first day in the studio with Gavin Monaghan. An old college friend of Joe’s (Mark Beamson) had been roped in to play live drums for the day without ever hearing him play. The session could’ve gone very badly and PUKK would’ve been a very short lived venture. It didn’t.

Joe had never set foot in a studio before and bought three songs with him. Sleeping Rough, Well Lived In Skin and Let’s Get Shit Faced. Yes, you read that right. The latter song being a rip roaring Country style joke about getting, well, shit faced. Gavin steered the session towards the first two songs and the end product was mind blowing. From a hiss covered home recording on dodgy gear to a polished professional radio ready finish ensured repeat visits to Gavin’s Magic Garden studio in Wolverhampton. The extra K was added due to the name Puk already being used by a Finnish metal band.

PUKK has been championed by BBC Introducing locally in Shropshire / West Midlands and nationally on BBC6 Music. Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson have both played songs on their BBC6 shows. Indie radio, podcasts and regional newspapers have been kind enough to play the tunes and write some very flattering things too. PUKK is self funded and everything is done in house due to budget restrictions. There’s no money for anything so figuring out how to DIY everything is at the centre of all things PUKK. All artwork is created on a smartphone using free apps and a bit of imagination as are the video clips. It’s been a mad learning curve but the results show it can be done with a bit of effort and internet access. PUKK hails from Telford, Shropshire.
